Can I submit a Facebook Privacy Settlement claim for a dead person?
Yes, however, there are a
few additional steps.
Initially, submit the
claim under the dead person's name and complete the "Your Facebook
Account" part of the claim form with their information.
The claim settlement administrator must then receive a request to modify the beneficiary or estate of the claimant's name.
To do that, you will need to present proof of the change in name, such as a copy of the death certificate.
Send the administrator
an email using its secure portal along with the justification for the
modification and any supporting documentation.

Include the claim ID from the claim confirmation along with the entire name of the dead individual in the subject line and write "Name Change - Facebook User Privacy Settlement" in the body of the email.

Is the settlement with Facebook legal?
According to a Meta spokeswoman,
"We pursued a settlement as it's in the best interest of our community and shareholders. We are notifying people about this settlement through their Facebook notifications so they can choose whether to participate."
How much money will I get in Facebook Privacy Settlement?
That's
unclear because, per the settlement website, the number of users who submit
claims will determine the payout amount per user.
The litigants' attorneys, however, will probably retain a percentage of the settlement as payment for their services.
According to the claim website, they may receive up to $181.3 million, or 25% of the settlement.
The settlement for Facebook users who request a portion of the claim will be reduced to $543.7
million if they receive that much.
Each claimant will receive one point for each month between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, during which they had an "activated" Facebook account.
The net settlement sum will be divided by the sum of all the points
allotted to claimants by the settlement administrator.
Each
claimant will receive that per-point sum multiplied by the number of points
they were given, so those who have used Facebook for shorter periods
would probably receive a lesser settlement sum.
When will I get Facebook Privacy Settlement money?
On September 7, the court will determine whether to approve the agreement and grant attorneys' fees and other costs, according to information on the claims site.
According to the website, even if the settlement is accepted, the case
might still be subject to appeals, the outcome of which would not be known for
some time.

court approves the settlement in full and following the conclusion of any
appeals, "Settlement payments will be distributed as soon as

What happens if I do nothing?
You forfeit your right to initiate a lawsuit against Facebook, to maintain an existing lawsuit, or to participate in any other legal action concerning the legal problems raised by the case if you neither submit a claim nor choose to opt out of the settlement.
Per the website, you also won't be
permitted to receive any settlement funds.
Are there any parties that the Facebook Privacy Settlement that do not apply?
People who work for Meta, connected businesses, or subsidiaries, as well as the plaintiff's attorneys and their staff, cannot participate in the settlement, except those who choose not to.
Additionally prohibited from
taking part are the special master, mediators, and judges participating in the
case.
Users residing outside of the United States or individuals who weren't using Facebook at any point between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, are also not covered by the settlement.
